Ammonium Hydroxide
Ammonia has countless uses: it is an extremely important
substance in industry.
• It is used as an agricultural fertilizer
• It is used as a starting reagent to synthesize nitric acid industrially
• It is used as an intermediate in the sodium bicarbonate synthesis
• It is used as a component in paints
• It is used as a refrigerant in refrigeration industry
• It is used to produce explosive
• It is used to produce nylon and synthetic fibre
• It is used to produce plastic materials and polymers
• It is used as a solvent
• It is used in paper industry as a bleaching
• It is used in rubber industry
• It is used in metallurgy to obtain reducing atmospheres
• It is used in combustion, in aqueous solution 25% for safety reasons,
as a reagent to control on nitrogen oxyde (NOx)
The ammonia in aqueous solution is obtained by making water absorb gaseous
ammonia. There are two principal quality of it: ammonia for technical
uses and pure ammonia. The first one is a colourless or lightly yellowish
liquid, its odour is a mix of ammonia and empyreumatic substances odours;
it can contain different impurities such as pyridine, tarry products,
sulphates, chloride, carbonates. The pure ammonia is limpid and colourless,
it has a clear odour of ammonia; it must not contain neither tarry products
nor foreign salts.
The liquid ammonia on market contains, usually, from 20 to 35% of NH3
; its concentration is usually valued by the measurement of density by
Baumè degreases.
